Three types of graphic design portfolios:

Online:

Online portfolios are becoming more common because they’re easier to send, and they are able to be more of an interactive presentation of an artist’s work.

PDF:

PDF portfolios are also becoming more common due to the same easy share ability as with online portfolios.

Other benefits include:

-control over layout without the worry of browser and web issues that you have with an online portfolio

-can be printed with consistent results

-the PDF itself serves as an example of an artist’s layout and typography skills

Classic:

The classic portfolio is an actual book with printed examples of an artist’s work, and is still used today despite the other platforms available through the digital world.

Benefits include:

-displays an artist’s work in its actual, final format

-can be brought to a meeting and shown without need for a computer

Five Ways to Promote Your Business:

Word-of-Mouth

You can spread awareness for your business through word-of-mouth.  Tell friends, acquaintances, family members about your business and encourage them to share with anyone they know would might be interested.

Send an Email Newsletter

You can send out an email newsletter out to any acquaintances who may be interested in such a business, or who know of someone who might be.  You could also send out a newsletter to all contacts made through the word-of-mouth technique.

Write a Blog

You can write up a graphic design blog that serves as a portfolio and as a business website.  You can give updates of your business on the blog, post examples of current business projects, and any special offers you may have.  The blog could be easily shared in a newsletter you might send out, and also on other social media platforms.

Create a Business Card

You can create a business card to promote your business.  A business card creates an extra level of professionalism for your business and individual image. The card also helps you show off your work as it may be the first example of your own design work that a future client may see.

Get Your Credit Line

You can and should get a credit line on your graphic design projects.  Some clients may not be okay with this, but if they are happy with your work they should.  A credit line is something on a project that given credit to you as the designer.  The credit line should not stand out, but should rather fade out into the background as you’re there to create for your clients, but your information is also there as you are the designer behind the projects.

In order to figure out my price/rate for a project I would first determine an hourly rate and then determine a flat rate.  The hourly rate would be determined by what the market can bear and then the flat rate would be decided after an hourly rate is determined.  An hourly rate is determined by calculating yearly expenses that are tied into any given project, and also the surrounding market.  What are the salaries of others in the same field? What are salaries that I have had at previous full-time jobs? What salary will maintain my lifestyle, including non-business related expenses? What are salaries of available jobs in my area that I am qualified for?  For a flat rate an estimation of how long it will take to complete the project is necessary.  Then using the estimating time, my hourly rate, and also adjusting as needed, I can approach my rates for a project.
